12-1-17

Dear Unicorn Families!

After some record heat, the Tucson winter is finally making its way to us.  With the 40 degree temperature change each day, please make sure jackets are labeled so you an easily find them in lost and found.  If you are new to Sunrise, the lost and found is located on the back side of the library facing the MPR.  This is where wayward jackets, lunch boxes and water bottles go.
We jumped right back into our curriculum.  We are finishing up with our focus on closed short vowel words.  We will continue with closed syllable words, but they will begin or end with a blend.  Some of the blends are sl, bl, dr, cr, str, ng, and st.  We are continuing with mental imagery, but this time we are looking at word clues in the poem to determine what the poem is about. In writing, the children finished their second draft of the story they are going to publish for our Author Share on December 19th.  We will finish up our unit on personal narratives and start on our non-fiction unit with how to books.  We shared the maps that the children brought to school.  The maps are now around the room as examples of all of the different ideas we are learning.  We will make our own maps over the next couple of weeks as well.
Thank you to those who sent in either drawn pictures or photographs of family traditions.  We will use the photographs the week of December 11th, so if you have not sent them in, you still have time.  All pictures will be returned to you without being cut, glued or changed in any way.  You can email pictures to me, if that is easier.
Our field trip to Las Milpitas is Friday, December 8th.  Please make sure your child is dressed to be outside for most of the day.  Please have your child wear running shoes to protect their feet while we walk around the garden and help plant things.  Please put sunscreen on at home.  All children must have a lunch in a lunch box or bag.  If you need to arrange for a sack lunch from Sodexo, please let me know by Tuesday, December 5th. Sodexo can prepare sack lunches for students for the lunch price of $3.25, or at the free or reduced price paid by the student each day.
If you would like to participate in helping a family out during the holidays, please go to the Spirit of Sunrise link below to sign up.  All items should be unwrapped and turned in to the classroom.  Thank you for your kindness during the holiday season.
Have a wonderful weekend.
